Writing Winning Articles: How to Powerfully Market Your Small Business, Establish You as the Expert

Writing and submitting articles is an effective marketing strategy to deliver targeted visitors to your website, increase your search engine rankings and boost sales.

However, it is easy to equate article writing with onerous tasks such as writing high school or university essays. The memories of the pain involved in this form of writing can take time to fade away. The good news is that after learning a few simple steps, writing your own articles isn't as hard as it appears.

One of the biggest hurdles most new writers face is finding ideas to write about. The easiest way to begin is to write about things you are interested in and preferably passionate about. You already have knowledge in these areas that can be shared with others. It is easy to under-estimate your own abilities in areas you are experienced in. Talented people are often surprised by the level of questions novices ask (it is important to remember that there is no such thing as a stupid question - only stupid answers).

Once you have decided on a general area, a good way to narrow the topic down is to focus on the problems that people have. Typically, people read articles because they want to be entertained or they want information. Writing entertaining articles is a particular and more difficult skill. However, writing informative articles can be as simple as sharing tips that you have learned. A guiding principle is to expect the readers to be looking for "What's in it for me?

For instance prospects of a local carpet cleaning company were thrilled to receive an article from the company that answered the question most asked by new customers why does it seem like getting my carpets cleaned make them get dirtier faster? This carpet cleaning company identified their prospects main complaint with their competitors, and by providing an informative article that answered that question, they were able to dramatically increase their business with just one mailing!

You may already know the common problems that people have in your particular field, but if not, a good source of information is to look at related online forums and note the most common questions asked. If you don't have all the answers a small bit of research can assist. Often the answers are readily available with a Google search that the readers could do themselves. However, you are adding value and convenience by providing a range of answers in a single document.

Most people don't like to read large documents from the Web, so unlike long essays, articles tend to be around 400 words long. If you break the article into an introduction, a small number of sub-headings and a conclusion you may only have to write about 50 words in each section. The sub-headings may be for authoring purposes only, but if they are relevant they can be left in the final article.

The first draft should be for your eyes only. Don't try to produce a final copy as you write. It tends to be much quicker to get your thoughts down and come back to edit later. The final step in the writing process is to proofread your article making sure that the writing flows and would be interesting to the reader. Ask yourself, 'does the article provide information the potential reader is looking for? It can also be helpful to have someone else proofread the article. This is also the time to remove spelling and grammatical errors.

If you still have problems writing you may want to do a search for 'article writing software'. There are many packages around which can make the process easier. Similarly, there are numerous e-books available on the topic and many of them are available for free.

Once you have written your article you may want to add it to your own website as an item that search engines love - a piece of original content. If you add an 'About the Author' section with a link to your website, you can also submit it to article directories.

As other websites publish your article you receive another thing that search engines look for, one-way back links. Article submission can be a tedious process, but software and websites that can submit to multiple directories in one do exist to make the job much easier.

After writing your first few articles you will find it is not as daunting as it first appears, and it helps to establish YOU as the go-to authority in your field winning you new customers and increased sales as a result!

Article Directories 101

I recently extended a challenge to a writing group. The challenge was to write and submit as many articles as possible to article directories online during the month of January. I was surprised to learn that some writers had never heard of article directories. So here's my crash course for writers: Article Marketing 101.

WHAT is an article directory? An article directory is a website that contains a database of articles. These articles are categorized by topic on the website. An article directory is a place where authors submit their articles. It is also a place where publishers can find free articles pertinent to their publishing needs; in exchange they place your bio and [active] links with your article when they publish it.

HOW do I submit my articles to an article directory? The process of submitting articles is simple. First, you'll need to create an account with the directory (this is usually free). Once your account is approved and activated, you'll be able to submit your articles.

WHO approves my articles? Article directories are normally maintained by human editors. Every article is read and checked by these editors and then must be approved. (Remember to read and follow the article directory's terms!)

WHEN are my articles displayed? Normal wait time can range from one day up to two weeks. On average, my articles are usually approved within 5-7 days.

WHERE are my articles used? Your articles are used in many venues. Sometimes an editor who is short an article for her monthly newsletter will search, find, and print a relevant article from the article database. One lady I know that runs an article directory has had several print publications use articles from her database, and is marketing it more and more towards the print publishers now.

WHY would I want to give away my articles for free? Submitting your articles to an article directory has tons of benefits. Not only do you get free marketing benefits from it, but you get lots of exposure. You can position yourself as an expert. It's a mutual win-win situation, for both you and the publishers that get to use your articles.

10,000 Web Site Visitors In 30 Days Using Article Marketing

Let me ask you a very important question. Would you like to get 10,000 web site visitors in one month to your web site? Using article marketing this is possible, but sorry to disappoint you there will be some work involved.

There are many different ways that you can use article marketing to drive traffic to your website. Also these visitors have a higher chance of buying your products. Chances are that they have already read many of your articles and that they already trust and like you so these leads will convert up to ten times better than leads from other sources. As the famous sales trainer Jeoffrey Gitomer once said people only buy from people that they like and trust.

You may be asking how does article marketing work? Article marketing is when you write an article which is very informative on a specific niche topic. You give to the reader by sharing your expert knowledge. You take back when you include your link in the bio that allows your visitor to click through to your web site.

Now let us look at how this works in reality. When you publish your article you submit it to all the major article directories. This will drive traffic to your web site as people search on the search engines and find your article for content directly related to the keywords that they have typed in. Your articles will also be distributed over the internet as other webmasters publish your content. This provides external links to your website and increases your link popularity and your search engine rankings.

So if you start doing article marketing and write hundreds of articles it is possible to get 10,000 visitors to your website.
